Quiet, humble, almost invisible. That is what the housekeeper was and demonstrated as she came into our room. Months before that day, Connie and I decided we would travel to West Virginia and experience the history of The Greenbriar. If you don\u2019t know the name, this hotel has quite a history\u2014both as a private entity as well as a secret and secure facility for the Executive Branch of the United States Government. You can read tons about it, but we wanted to go and soak it in. This story is more so about a lady and not the resort, though both proved extremely interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna Marie Bustos was born and raised in the country of Colombia. Both Connie and I have traveled to Colombia, we have gone there together, as well as separately on different excursions. Some for the coffee world that we get to dabble in, and she, with friends along the Northern coast to the town of Cartagena. So naturally when we asked Anna Marie what country she was from and she replied in a moderately Latina-laced accent, Colombia, we became a tad more interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immigration policies of the United States are pretty straight-forward. As an immigrant, you apply for entry into the States in your home country, obtain a Visa, you come here follow the Visa requirements, educate yourself for the testing, then apply to become a naturalized citizen after 3 or 5 years, depending on your marital status. Pretty simple in principle. Anna Marie and her husband committed to this route, and then executed it flawlessly, today they are both citizens of our beautiful country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you think of working as a housekeeper in a hotel, most people would not naturally think, I didn\u2019t anyway, that the job would have long-tenured employees within the workforce. My lesson that morning was, \u201cCrumpton, you once again have proven to yourself that you don\u2019t know much about predicting what happens in life,\u201d this is a life-lesson I get to reteach myself pretty often, maybe one day it will sink in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than 20 years, Anna Marie has made The Greenbriar her work home, 22 years of taking care of people and their in-room accommodations, and doing it with \u201cCon Muchas Ganas\u201d, meaning, \u201cwith a lot of desire and enthusiasm\u201d. That is how this lady goes about her business. You can tell she likes what she does, she does it very well, and she does it with such grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OK, let\u2019s get to the origin that sparked me to start typing. Her Grandfather, Mr. Bustos. He was the rock that Anna Marie looked up to, admired, and maybe even modeled herself after, though when you are young, you may not even know you are modeling after someone. You simply know they are good, that they are a force, and that they take care of you. Having talked with her about her grandfather that morning, she knew exactly those three things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation about her grandfather started when we (I cannot remember if Connie said it or if I did) noticed her attention to detail was at a very high level. She moved with a steady drive but was super detailed as she moved through our room. Sheets, drapes, bathroom, etc., she was just a joy to watch. For folks like us, we really appreciate the details that people demonstrate when executing their craft, and she was on point. I really love to see people dig into their work with mastery on full display. Yes, mastery. It is available in any and all jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without regurgitating all the talking points, she began to tell us that her grandfather was a very important man in their community. Not in a financial way, but in a way that helped the community live better. He brought together groups to dig wells for people who needed potable water, he helped school-aged children get clothing, among other things that were tangible to the people in their immediate community. Not just writing a check to a non-profit somewhere and \u201choping\u201d the funds made it to a person who could actually benefit from the benevolence, as many of us do for one reason or another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Anna went on to explain more about her family, he community, and her route to where she currently is, she told us about the last conversation she was able to have with her grandfather before he passed away. Maybe all the keystrokes above do not equal the gravity of these final words I type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After exchanging all the normal emotional words that we do in those situations, her grandfather asked her to please retain his last name for the rest of her life\u2014Bustos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to tell her that if she could keep his legacy alive by doing more to serve, to help, and by most of all, \u201cHaving a very robust and deep work ethic\u201d that would forever make him happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission accomplished, Anna Marie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
